Client Research
Research BBC.pptx from LewisJB
This PowerPoint was made to assemble all of the research I did on the client and documentaries into one place. As mentioned in the PowerPoint, the BBC is a conglomerate which means that they are a very large company that owns smaller companies and allow the companies they own to be self-governed by their own CEOs while still owning stakes in that company. It also means that they are an international company and can use their own platforms to show their products (shows/movies). I briefly mentioned that in the beginning days of the BBC they used an early form of Uses And Gratification theory. This theory was made by Katz and Blumler.
Client Content
During my research on BBC Three I tried to look at some short documentaries that they themselves had done to try and see any similarities in their work that I could incorporate into my own work. Above are two documentaries made by BBC Three. The first thing I noticed straight away was that they display the BBC Three icon in the top left hand corner of the screen through out the entire video. They also make this icon slightly see through so if something is behind the icon it isn't too obstructed and doesn't detract from what's on screen. It acts as a watermark that lets the watcher know that BBC Three have made what you are watching. Too keep on brand with their style, I think adding this watermark will be imperative even if it is a small detail. The second thing I noticed is that when there is text is on screen it is always white and quite big. So when needed I will try to make the text similar in terms of font, size and colour.
Audience Research
I have conducted this survey to get a better understanding of my demographics feelings on modern culture as well as documentaries which is what the project will be. My expectations for the demographic were for them to be pretty involved in culture as the age range for the audience is 16-24 Year-Olds so I was hardly expecting them to be philistines. I have an idea in mind that has to do with how culture and technology are now linked continuously and want to see if this is accurate, But let's see if my assumptions are right or wrong.
Question 1
The question I started off with was asking what their hobby was so I could see how many people's hobbies involve electronics and modern technology. A good chunk of the answers has gaming or watching television with others involving sports. This is good as I now know that my expectations of the audience were correct and it supports my current idea for the project
Question 2
This question asked if they would watch a documentary about their interests For this question all the answers came back positive with 100% responding yes which again is great as everyone looks likely to engage with documentaries and with the digital culture theme so this data is really positive
Question 3
this is related to the second question as I asked for more detail on their opinions on documentaries which again came back promising as they often described documentaries as "interesting" and "informative" which reaffirms the results from the previous question.
Question 4
This next question asks directly about their Phones and how much time they spend on them a day and their feelings about how much or how little they spend. I expected high screen times with perhaps either negative or indifferent feelings toward their screen time, the reason I expected this was that I also am addicted to my phone and I am less than content with that fact. The answers were actually more negative than I expected them to be which I could use as something to address in the documentary as it seems bigger than initially thought.
Question 5
Question 5 asks the audience if they think that culture has evolved from the beginning of the millennium to the present day. unanimously, 100% said they believe it has changed and I would have to agree as a lot has changed as now most things I know or most cultural aspects I indulge in come from things I've seen on the internet/on my phone which was in its infancy in 2000.
Question 6
100% of the respondents have heard of BBC Three which is good as BBC and BBC Three are the clients that I am making the documentary for so the audience being familiar with the client is important
Question 7
The last question relates to BBC Three as they have only recently came back to regular television after becoming a streaming service to appease its young viewers. I asked if they watched streaming services more or regular TV more. 70% said Streaming services and 30% said TV.
Audience Profile
This power point was made so I could list the audiences psycho graphics and social grade so i can guide the project more towards what they would like. It's always good to get this kind of data as it can indicate what the audience could find appealing as this younger audience's psycho graphics are Explorer which means that they want to see individualism, something unique, and something adventurous in their media. This power point also serves as a brief point of reference for who my audience is and what they like.
Focus Group Question List
Q1: What would say is the most crucial part of modern culture?
Q2: What part of culture do think has changed the most
Q3: What part of culture do you indulge in the most?
Q4: Do you think you could go a whole day without going on your phone
Q5: Do you think that technology integrating itself into daily life is a good thing or a bad thing and why do you think this?
Here is the list of questions I am going to ask in a focus group I am going to conduct with members of the audience. This question list for a focus group is a lot shorter than the ones I have done in the past but this is because I believe these questions can get a lot deeper into the audience's thoughts on the world around them and their feelings about their own lives. I'm potentially thinking of using this focus group not only for research but for the documentary as I'm sure that some of the answers would be used as a better insight into the subject. I've intentionally went for more open-ended questions as I want more detailed and fully formed answers that I can pick apart and dissect to gain further ideas for the pre-production.
Focus Group
This focus group was very insightful not only into some of the audiences livelihoods as for example during the first question majority of the group answered that technology was the most crucial part of culture but Sean added that he thinks he "can't really live without it". This comment shows that young people have a dependency on technology he most likely is referring to his phone when he made this comment which is something that I could expand upon in the documentary.
The second question was answered with a mix of communication and technology for the part of culture that has changed the most. This is interesting because in their responses for why communication has changed the most It had to do with being online. This shows that because of the advancement in technology it has also brought forward other parts of culture as we can now talk to and get know almost anyone on the planet through social media and other electronic communication methods that makes being social more accessible.
The third questions answers actually relate back to what Sean said earlier about not being able to live without technology. Mainly everyone responded with 'Social Media' with Leon saying that he uses it "far too much" this is the second time that an indication of dependency on phones and technology has came up which is a real sign to me that addressing this in the documentary could really strike a chord with the audience.
The fourth question goes further in depth with how bad the participants think their dependency on phones is with the most common responses to 'how long could you go without your phone?' being a matter of days or at the very least a few hours which to me sounds like addiction. This now for certain is showing me that addressing addiction to mobile phones could be a good way to help my audience feel like they are being related to and drawn into the documentary.
The Fifth question sees to gather what the overall feeling is amongst the group that technology is integrating itself into their lives which was met with either luke-warm opinions or positive opinions which for something that has the signs of being a chronic problem is quite alarming. I can see that when talking about technology in the documentary I may need to ease into talking about it as the audience may switch off so I'd have to find a way to draw them in and get them with a message.
After analysing their answers, I've decided to talk about how technology is effecting people but perhaps also tying it in with something the audience would be interested in. Potentially this could be other aspects of culture than technology that is more consumable or more commonly thought of in peoples daily lives. This Focus group has helped me with my planning and I'm glad I have conducted it
Options for the subject of the documentary
This Video serves as an evaluation of the different ideas I have for the project. I wanted to do this so I could weigh up the pros and cons of each idea and find which one is better suited to make a project about. I will also consult this to a group that includes members of the audience so they can say which one interests them the most and why to ultimately decide as a whole which one is the best. Creating this video was very useful as gives me a chance to consult my ideas if at any point I'm struggling to move forward in the production or post-production
Subject Feedback
This focus group was conducted after I showed the group the video above so that they could a better understanding of my reasons for each of the different options. As a whole, the group said that they would be more attracted to a documentary about music for multiple reasons such as that they just enjoy it and they believe that it's been changed a lot through technology
